The Shower of Confidence Re-Blogged

I first posted this blog back in April 2012. Using the suggestion of a shower to either wash away (negative thoughts/words etc) or to coat ( positive words/ ideas) continues to be a very effective and versatile element of  my therapy sessions. So here it is again:

Bath or shower? Which do you prefer? Does it depend on what you want to do with the rest of the day, or how you feel...?
Baths have become something of a luxury; something of a treat or a special occasion; something to do at the end of a difficult day to soak away all your aches and pains. By the time you have luxuriated in a bath you may be so relaxed that all you want to do is go to sleep.
Some people do their thinking in the bath; they put their world to rights before the end of the day, go to bed unburdened and awake refreshed.
Nowadays, however, the majority of people  have showers rather than baths - for all sorts of reasons: cheaper, quicker, more refreshing etc

You might not spend long in the shower but use the time to your advantage:
The shower can be the perfect place for a few well chosen affirmations, especially at the start of the day; words that will get you off to a good start and enable you to achieve your potential.

Use the following, or create your own:
  • I am confident and calm
  • I am in charge of my destiny
  • I am proud of who I am and what I have achieved
Speak in the present and the positive; don't use "I will.." or "try".

Say the affirmations in your head, say them out loud, or put them to the tune of your favourite song. It doesn't really matter -  just  be confident.

Alternatively,  as the water flows over your body, imagine that the water is washing away all your troubles, fears and negative feelings. Imagine that the water droplets are tiny words representing your negative feelings and watch as they disappear down the drain. Then imagine that the water droplets coming  from the shower head are all positive words and notice how they make you feel as they wash over your body.
The more often you do this, the easier it will become  and you will soon be able to benefit from your Shower of Confidence.

Anne Marie Stagg: Just do it!

Just do it!

I find it really hard to ask for help...
I am one of those people who will go the extra mile to help someone - it doesn't even have to be someone I know; I'll help anyone if I can.
In the past that's meant that I have spent hours researching information  on the internet or sorting through drawers and cupboards for the essentials of a pirate costume or home baking at midnight for  a village event. Once I even intervened when a couple were having a loud and very aggressive domestic in the street; I put the woman in my car and drove her to the police station, waited for her and ended up taking her home and checking the house before she could go in.
It is who I am...
But when I need to ask for help, particularly now that I want to take my business to the next level, I agonise over speaking to people who know me for fear of being a nuisance or being rejected or made to feel a fool. I can find a million different excuses to avoid picking up the phone to make that call. I wonder why it is that, for me, it is easier to ask a stranger than to ask a member of my family or a friend.
So, I have decided that to "get on" I have to "get out there"  and if my business is to grow then I am going to have to be a lot more proactive.
I am going to set myself some targets, plan my activity based on what I want to achieve and just do it. No more excuses!

The Power of Positive

Some people spend their whole life regretting what could have been; what should have been; what went wrong; what bad luck they had - when the only person they have to blame is actually themselves and a negative attitude.
There must be hundreds of wise sayings out there along the lines of "If you always do what you've always done then you'll get exactly the same results" and "If you want to be successful then surround yourself  with successful people"... and they are so true, but sometimes knowing what you need to do  and actually doing it can be pretty near impossible and it would be oh so easy to give up.
So, celebrate even the smallest success and  actively work on positive language patterns. Keep a record of  what you achieve, no matter how small, and be proud of it.
If no-one else is there to tell you how well you are doing then tell yourself: look at your reflection in the mirror each morning and say out loud what you have achieved. Speak in the positive eg Rather than saying "I want to be a successful  writer by Christmas" use"I am a successful writer". Really mean what you say as you look directly in to your own eyes.
Avoid using "try" eg I am going to try to eat healthily"
If you "try", the implication is that you may not succeed.
In addition to the words you use it is also really important that you act as someone who is positive and successful.
SMILE! This instils an air of confidence in you and makes others feel more positive towards you
LISTEN! Listen to everything you are told and respond appropriately; this shows respect and sends positive vibes to the speaker making them more sympathetic to your cause.
LEARN! Do your research whether from role models, books or the internet. Ensure that you have the depth of knowledge that makes you stand out as an expert in your field.
ACT! Play a role, even if it is not yet who you are: If you want others to see you as a successful salesperson then dress, act and speak like a successful salesperson. Find a role model  either amongst your colleagues, on TV or in the media and copy what they do, how they speak, the clothes they wear. Nowadays technology makes it so easy to find all of the information you need.
Make up your mind to be an enabler and give generously of your time without expecting anything in return; you will reap the rewards.
You can be anything that you want to be...

Frumptarn Guggenband

Yesterday I had the privilege of seeing this amazing group in action at the Beverley Folk Festival. The weather has not been kind to us for most of the weekend so many people were perhaps feeling  a little damp and down, but anyone who saw this group in action on Saturday out by the Craft marquee just had to smile.
A Barnsley group, they were dressed in black and white cow-patterned clothing; their unique style of music featuring assorted wind instruments and drums ( plus the odd PE teacher's whistle) really got the crowd  engaged and one or two started swaying to the rhythm and tapping their feet.
And then Frumptarn Guggenband  upped their game...
The musicians started to dance wildly, whirling like dervishes, flailing their instruments in the air, just doing their own thing. The crowd became more enthusiastic and it was virtually impossible to avoid being  involved, with much tapping of feet, swaying of hips and gyrating.
It seemed that no sooner had the group started than they finished and went off on their way to participate in the evening concert but  they lifted the spirits of  a lot of people. I look forward to seeing them perform again. True entertainers!

Control Room

One of the techniques which I regularly use in Hypnotherapy is the Control Room. It can be used successfully for a whole range of issues including weight loss, fears and phobias, insomnia etc and is particularly effective for dealing with panic attacks.
Under  hypnosis I will ask the client to walk down a flight of steps and enter their own control room - the place where all of the systems controlling thoughts and feelings are housed. Everyone has their own version of this room so I encourage the client, still under hypnosis, to give feedback, initially using a nodding of the head and then supplying answers to my questions about the various controls within their room.
Controls take many guises but I have always found that the client is able to describe some sort of measure of activity whether they use dials, levers, gauges, colours or arrows etc
I ask the client to describe each control  and where they are at on that range at that point.
Imagination is a powerful tool and it is up to the client how they make that control work more efficiently  eg dust and polish; WD40 etc
When they are satisfied that the control is working efficiently  I ask them to adjust it to a more effective level and having done this, they fix the control at the new point perhaps by wedging or gluing. They then remove all of the scale  so that the level cannot move backwards and attach a signed and dated sticky label to the control ( as an electrician would following a PAT test).
In the course of a session  we may work on 3or 4 controls and revisit these on the subsequent sessions.
The final element of the Control Room technique is for the client to fling open the windows of the room to blow away all of the cobwebs and as they leave the room they hit a boost button which gives a surge of energy through the room.
As the control room becomes more efficient in future sessions the boost button is then put on to an  automatic timer so that it is no longer necessary to visit the room.
A very simple but effective technique.
